Over the last two decades Brad Cole's work has addressed the relationship of the land to the human presence in a metaphorical context.
Cole uses varying components - human figures, oceans, rivers, artifacts and the land to make books and projects that speak of dream and myth.
In 1982, Cole began photographing the sea and evolving two expansive projects, Last Dream - a monograph/bookwork, and, Another Room - a slide projector/dissolve installation. Last Dream and Another Room meld Cole's large format images with his cinematic and sound sensibilities, elegantly revealing how his work in one medium affects discovery in another.
Returning to the basis of his work, SEA is a distillation of 20 years of silver gelatin photographs made at the edge of the ocean.
Cole has completed numerous additional bodies of photographic, film and sound works.
Cole's work is published nationally and is held in private and public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and the San Diego Museum of Photograhic Arts, California. In 1997 he was a recipient of the Center for Photographic Art, Artist of the Year Award. His work is represented by the Weston Gallery in Carmel, California.
