Artist's
Biography
Paul
Kozal works in two distinct areas: toned
and hand-painted black-and-white silver
gelatin and silver and palladium prints.
His subject matter is almost entirely the
landscape of California and the Southwest.
He chooses to make photographs no larger
than 5 x 7 inches, creating highly detailed
and delicately rendered images, selectively
toning with sepia to create a warm, rich
quality. He is also known for his work with
hand-coloring, a technique that began with
the daguerreotype in the 1840’s. While the
painted colors seldom mirror reality, they
can enhance the imagery and even evoke a
period. His latest work was taken at the
Sea Ranch near Gualala, CA, and displays
his ability to expressively capture organic
forms within nature.
