Artist's
Biography
Upon
retiring from his career as a cinematographer,
during which he helped create an Academy Award-nominated
documentary on still photography, Ed Martin
set up a darkroom and studio in his Los Angeles
home and began experimenting with the technique
of Cibachrome printing. Often related to the
themes of life and death, his images are produced
slowly, painstakingly, and with love. Martin
substitutes a photographic enlarger for a
camera, placing objects on glass in the enlarger
and then projecting the image onto film. He
is particularly fascinated by the effect that
lamp oil has on plants and flowers, viewing
the process as a mysterious metamorphosis.
Thinking of his work as an exploration, Martin
finds every day as much a discovery of process
as it is of composition.
