Artist's
Biography (1903
- 1991)
Aaron
Siskind's original intention was to become
a writer. However, after receiving a camera
for a wedding present, he became fascinated
with the medium's potential. He moved to
New York in 1930 and joined the Film and
Photo League, producing social documentary
images. He then bought a large-format camera
and began creating abstract photographs.
Siskind taught elementary and junior high
school from 1926 to 1948. He moved to Chicago
and began teaching photography at the Institute
of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology
and remained there for twenty years.
